Poem Inspired Drawing

22×30 on arches paper- used mediums such as watercolor, gouache, charcoal, pencil, ink, and chalk pastels. this was inspired by the poem “We Wear the Mask” by Paul Laurence Dunbar.  Which is about the concealing one’s true feelings of pain and distress. Humanity often hides themselves behind a social mask. What I wanted to display was how a person could be trapped in his or her own head for a long time. Slowly dying unable to express the truth. Time is a main focus; with elements such as the calendar, clock and tally marks. The whole image is supposed to represent the inside of someone’s head; the back of the skull is present to represent this. The barbwire’s purpose is to convey the idea that the mind is like a prison.
